Some people are unlucky enough to experience hair loss as they grow older. For some, hair loss is a natural part of aging, and they don’t experience any discomfort. For others, hair loss can be very disruptive and even lead to psychological problems. There’s nothing that can be done about it, other than treatment for androgenetic alopecia, because hair loss is largely genetic. This treatment can be performed with finasteride, dutasteride and minoxidil.

The loss of hair can vary in speed. It can be gradual, developing over years, or it can occur more rapidly. The official term for this type of hair loss is “androgenetic alopecia.” This baldness is caused by the sensitivity of hair follicles to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is produced by the body from testosterone.
In men, the effects of hair loss are recognizable by a decrease in the amount of hair on the crown or temples.
In women, androgenetic alopecia typically manifests as a gradual thinning of the hair on top of the head, especially around the center parting. Unlike in men, the frontal hairline often remains, and completely bald patches rarely develop. The hair thins diffusely, making the scalp more visible.
The process of androgenetic alopecia can be counteracted with medications that block the conversion of testosterone to DHT (finasteride and dutasteride). This conversion can be prevented by treatment with finasteride or dutasteride. Both finasteride and dutasteride inhibit the action of DHT, allowing hair to regrow in areas where it had previously stopped growing.
Minoxidil is a treatment (lotion or oral) that reduces hereditary hair loss in men and women and stimulates hair growth by improving blood flow around hair follicles. It extends the hair’s growth phase, making it thicker and fuller. It works best for early-stage baldness and must be applied daily to maintain results.
After a period of 3-6 months, hair growth will resume in areas where it had previously stopped growing. Treatment with finasteride, dutasteride or minoxidil requires continuous treatment. If you stop treatment, the newly formed hairs will disappear within six months to a year.
